Former Chelsea player John Mortimore who spent nine remarkable years with the Blues has died at the age of 86 as entire football world mourns, SunSport reports.

He played 279 matches for the west Londoners before joining Queens Park Rangers in 1966 where he retired as an active player.

Mortimore had his remarkable moment in 1965 when he won the League Cup with Chelsea but didn't play in the first-leg 3-2 win over Leicester but was at the heart of the defence in the second as Chelsea earned a 0-0 draw.

He left to take up a managerial role at Greek club Ethnikos Piraeus and later managed English club Portsmouth in 1973.

He was then appointed Benfica manager in 1976 and won the league in his first season in charge.

Mortimore would lift the Portuguese title once again in 1987 while winning back-to-back domestic cups.

He later worked with Southampton in various roles including as a coach, assistant manager and chief scout.

Throughout his long-dedicated association with the club, John also served as coach, assistant manager and chief scout.

And this is coming less than a week that Jamaica’s record goalscorer and former Sheffield United star Luton Shelton passed away at the age of 35, according to a statement by the club.

It was gathered that the former striker had battled Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis for some time but he, sadly, lost the fight.

He spent a season at Bramall Lane between 2007 and 2008 and left the club with remarkable contributions as he remains a cult hero there.

Shelton will be remembered for his debut display against Premier League giants Manchester United having joined Sheffield from Swedish side Helsingborgs.

And Jamaican reports claim Shelton, who bagged 35 goals in 75 appearances for the Reggae Boyz, passed away at his home.

Recall that Legit.ng earlier reported that Former Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier has been confirmed dead after a long battle with sickness.

The 73-year-old was in charge of the Merseyside outfit between 1998 and 2004 and won six titles for them both domestically and on the continent, none of which was a Premier League silverware.

Houllier's most successful year at Anfield was when he led them to win a treble in the 2000-01 season. They won the UEFA Cup, the FA Cup, and the EFL title.
