Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers has been backed as the favourite candidate to replace underfire Frank Lampard at Chelsea.

The 42-year-old has come under immense pressure in recent weeks after leading the Blues to a poor run of results.

Lampard's men on Sunday evening, January 3, continued their disappointing streak in the Premier League as they suffered a 3-1 defeat in the hands of Man City.

Ilkay Gundogan, Phil Foden and Kevin De Bruyne all scored a goal apiece to guide City to a comprehensive win, with Callum Hudson-Odoi scoring the home side's consolation.

The defeat was Chelsea's fourth in their last six fixtures in what has emerged as the club's worst start to a campaign in 17 years.

Despite Lampard splashing over £250 million on new signings in the summer, the Stamford Bridge dwellers now find themselves sitting eighth on the standings after 17 games.

The club's owner Roman Abramovich has in recent years earned a reputation of showing underperforming managers the door, with Lampard now believed to be walking a tightrope.

Mail Online reports Rodgers is the bookie's favourite to take over from the Englishman.

The ex-Liverpool manager will be no visitor at Stamford Bridge, having previously worked under Jose Mourinho as academy head youth coach.

He would later serve under Avram Grant and Luiz Felipe Scolari before he left the club in 2008 to join Watford as manager.

Currently attached with the Foxes, Rodgers managed to lead the side to a fifth-place finish last season.

The King Power Stadium-based outfit sit third on the standings with 32 points, just one behind second-placed Man United.

Legit.ng earlier reported that Chelsea are enduring one of the club's worst starts to a Premier League season following their 3-1 defeat to Man City on Sunday evening, January 3.

The Blues were looking to return to winning ways after going winless in three of their recent matches when they took on City at Stamford Bridge.

However, it was the visitors who got the better of them as they put the game to bed in the first half.
