Lionel Messi looked like the greatest talent that ever played football in 2012 when he scored 91 goals for club and country in the calendar year.

The Argentine played a total of 69 matches for his national team and Barcelona that year and wrote his name in the history book at the age of 25.

Messi scored 79 of the goals for La Blaugrana and notched up 12 for the Albicelste to break Gerd Muller's 40-year record of 85 strikes in a year for Germany and Bayern Munich.

He scored 13 Champions League goals including five against Bayer Leverkusen and four against Premier League side Arsenal.

Messi also had eight goals in his name in the Copa del Rey, two in the Supercopa and 59 in 38 La Liga games.

A further breakdown of goals saw the six-time Ballon d'Or winner score nine hat-tricks and 14 penalties.

He also opened the scoring in 21 out of 47 contests and averaged a goal every 66 minutes which sets him higher than any competitor.

Being a midfielder that plays into the box, Messi scored 79 goals inside the penalty area and 40 of them came in the final 30 minutes of every game.

Messi's 2012 feat saw him score more than top European clubs including Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund, Manchester United and Chelsea.

He won his fourth Ballon d'Or that year providing 29 assists for his teammates to wrap up an outstanding year.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had earlier reported that Lionel Messi has finally spoken out as he enters into the final six months of his contract at Barcelona.

The 33-year-old submitted a transfer request during the summer but later rescinded his decision to stay the Camp Nou.

The Argentine superstar decided to see out the remaining one year in his deal and would make a final decision whether to move on or not.
