Only five points separate Arteta's men from 18th placed Fulham who have eight after 12 rounds of fixtures.

Despite their struggles, Arteta is confident he is capable of steadying the ship as Arsenal prepare to take on high-flying Southampton on Wednesday night, December 16.

Speaking ahead of the clash, the Spaniard said the north Londoners' poor form is just a blip, exuding confidence his wards will help him get the side's campaign back on track. Arteta told Metro UK when asked if Arsenal were already in a relegation battle.

"I would say that we are in a blip and the way we are losing football matches makes me believe that.
"But we need to start to win, because if not, you start dropping and dropping in the table and obviously that is not the situation that we want to be in."

A win over the Saints is sure to raise Arsenal's spirits even as they prepare for the ever-busy Christmas period.

The Emirates dwellers are scheduled to take on Everton in their next league match before facing Man City in an EFL quarter-final tie on Tuesday, December 22.

Legit.ng earlier reported that Mikel Arteta has been asked to be sacked as Arsenal coach from supporters of the club following their defeat against Burnley.

The Gunners were humbled by a 1-0 loss at the Emirates despite starting the game on a promising note.

However, Granit Xhaka got sent off on the hour mark as the Clariets turned on the heat until Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was pressured into heading the ball into his own net.
