The Super Eagles of Nigeria will file out against the Desert Foxes of Algeria on Friday night, October 9 at the Jacques Lemans Arena Die Zeit in St. Veit, Austria.

The friendly is in preparation for the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Sierra Leone in November.

Nigeria have not played any international match since their 4-2 home win against Lesotho in November 2019 and Gernot Rohr’s side, having won their first two games in Group L, lead the group with six points.

The friendly against Algeria is more interesting because the North Africans defeated the Eagles in the 2019 AFCON semifinals after Riyad Mahrez struck in a freekick in the last second as they went on to winning the tournament.

Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr said:

“It’s a test game, we want to see our new players. The objective is to prepare for AFCON and the World Cup.
“Algeria are unbeaten in 18 games, we want to stop them, we hope so. They are a strong team in Africa, the champions, it will be a big test for us.”

The North Africans have not been in action since last November due to the coronavirus pandemic, most recently beating Botswana to make it two wins from their two qualification games for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, leaving them top of Group H and they are in good shape for the Nigeria encounter.

However, reports from the Eagles camp have it that Alex Iwobi will play in the midfield alongside the duo of Mikel Agu and national team debutant Frank Onyeka.

According to Complete Sports, the trio has impressed manager Gernot Rohr in training and likely to make the starting line-up in the much anticipated fixture.

Manchester City star Ryad Mahrez is expected to lead the Algerian attack as he is expected to partner with Yacine Brahimi upfront.

Meanwhile, earlier reported that Oghenekaro Etebo has been ruled out of the friendly after the midfielder suffered injury at his club Galatasaray.

The 24-year-old managed to play full 90 minutes in his club’s 1-0 loss to Kasimpasa in the Turkish Super Lig on Sunday October 4.

“Oghenekaro Etebo is out of the friendlies. He picked up a knock in his club's game in Turkey yesterday,” said the Super Eagles on their official Instagram handle.
