Lionel Messi may have hinted that he will see out his contract at Barcelona before finally bidding them goodbye next summer.

The 33-year-old has been linked with top European clubs, but Manchester City are the most ambitious with Pep Guardiola set to help them capture the Argentine's signature.

Other teams like Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus, Manchester United, Chelsea and even Liverpool were said to be interested but the six-time Ballon d'Or winner would prefer reuniting with ex-boss.

Messi handed the Catalans his transfer request towards the end of last month, but the Camp Nou outfit will not allow him go unless his suitors pay the £623 million release clause.

Both Messi's father and the club's chiefs have held a series of meetings since his decision to quit the Blaugrana and Jorge admitted on Thursday, September 3.

The Sun further reports that when asked whether Messi not leaving was a possibility, he said: "Yes."

Barca revealed that the 33-year-old has been on strike since he was denied a chance to leave for free this window - having failed to show up for for a COVID-19 test and pre-season training.

Meanwhile, the club insisted that the clause that would have allowed Messi to leave without hindrance expired in June and insisted that his suitors must cough up £623 million.

The winger would have a chance to increase his 634 goals in 731 appearances for the Catalans if he stays at the club for another season.

With an ambitious manager and quality signings, he might win his fifth Champions League title in his last season at Camp Nou.

But once his deal runs out in Spain, the Argentine star will reunite with former boss Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.

Meanwhile, Frenchman Antoine Griezmann is hoping that Messi will remain at the club beyond this transfer window.

He told Mundo Deportivo: "We try to have news, but what happens is between the club and him. We just hope he stays. We listen to a bit of everything but we don't know more on our part." earlier reported that Barcelona president Josep Bartomeu has been accused of corruption by Catalan police in another unpalatable development at the Nou Camp.

This latest development is coming in at the time when the 57-year-old Spaniard is battling to keep Barcelona captain Messi this summer.

There have been reports that Messi could be leaving Barcelona this summer or at the end of his remaining one year contract.
