Lionel Messi has received a slight dig from his former team-mate Ivan Rakitic who has just left the Catalan club to join La Liga rivals Sevilla, following the appointment of Ronald Koeman as Quique Setien’s successor.

The words coming from the Croatian international are coming at a time Messi is desperate to also leave the club, but the Catalans are desperate to keep the star.

In a chat with reporters after he left the club, Rakitic stated that the best option for any player is always Barcelona, but admitted that it might not be the case for everyone.

He said: "The first option and the best option for all players is always Barca. Then, each player has to make their decision. For me, the first option would always be to be at Barca.

"Every player has to do his own analysis and I believed it was my moment. What Messi and other players are going to do, I don't know, you'd have to ask them.

"I've spoken with the board and we're all satisfied. And I'm convinced that everyone will make their own analysis and do the best for all parties.

"I respect the decision of every player and I've already said that these are decisions everyone has to make."

Although the embattled player’s father Jorge and Barcelona chiefs had one on one meeting on Wednesday evening, September 2, it ended in a stalemate as they were unable to reach any conclusion.

The Argentina international submitted a transfer request after Barcelona's ouster in the Champions League after losing embarrassingly to Bayern Munich.

Meanwhile, earlier reported that Messi is now reportedly on the verge of staying at Spanish side Barcelona at least until the end of his current contract following meeting with his father Jorge and the board.

Premier League club Manchester City have been named as the possible destination for Lionel Messi after the Argentine handed in a transfer request.

But Guardiola and his board have not made an official bid for the six-time Ballon d'Or winner who has refused to train this week at the Nou Camp.
