Lionel Messi could become the most expensive footballer in the world at the age of 33 if he leaves Barcelona this season.

The Argentine has been linked with a move to Manchester City and this would reunite him with his former boss Pep Guardiola.

Although, some quarters believe he will join Inter Milan in a bid to renew rivalry with Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo.

The likes of Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and most recently, the Old Lady have also shown interest in the six-time Ballon d'Or winner.

However, the drama surrounding his transfer to his prospective club has made Messi the most talked about player this summer.

The Catalan giants claim the clause that enables him to walk away from the club for free expired in June, but the attacker believes it should have been extended with the season.

Barca are insisting that any club that wants to sign the winger must be ready to cough up the €700 million release clause on his deal.

While the entire globe is waiting in suspense to see where the pendulum will swing, Messi's transfer saga is about to top the chart in the category that also includes Neymar and Ronaldo.

According to UK outlet Daily Record, the Argentine captain has agreed to move to the Etihad Stadium in a deal worth €700 million (£623 million) with the City Football Group - the same amount as his release clause.

The embattled Barcelona star was said to have agreed to the financial terms over the course of five years that will see him under employ of the City Football Group.
