John Obi Mikel has joined in the mourning of Nasarawa United star Chineme Martins who passed away during a Nigerian Premier League match with Katsina United, cited on Instagram.
The midfielder collided with an opponent as he collapsed to the ground and efforts made to bring him back to life were futile.
He was then rushed to Dalhatu- Araf Specialist Hospital in Lafia where he gave up the ghost on March 9, 2020.
Former Super Eagles captain took to his Instagram handle and mourned Martins whose death came as a shock to many Nigerians.
"Rest In Peace, my prayers and thoughts are with your family and friends."
Chairman of the League Management Committee (LMC), Shehu Dikko, said the league regrets the passing of the young man in his prime.
“We commiserate with Nasarawa United and the immediate family of the late player.
He added: “It is hoped that the findings of the autopsy would inform subsequent measures, if any that has not been addressed by the existing standard procedure."
The match ended 3-0 in favour of Nasarawa but there will be nothing to cheer about after losing one of their key players in the cold hands of death.
