Super Eagles midfielder Oghenekaro Etebo is a major doubt for Nigeria’s 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Republic of Benin and Lesotho in November.

According to reports coming out of the Championship side, Etebo, who missed out Nigeria’s Super Eagles friendly against Brazil’s Selecao was injured during Stoke City’s 1-0 away defeat to Sheffield Wednesday, on Tuesday night, October 22, at Hillsborough Stadium.

The 23-year-old Etebo was substituted in the 24th minute of the encounter and Stoke City manager Nathan Jones confirmed during his post-match conference that the Nigerian international cropped a muscular injury.

The midfielder has already been ruled out of Stoke City away trip to Millwall on Saturday, October 26.

“To lose Etebo early was a big blow for us and then lose your centre-half, invariably the one that came on makes a big error for the only goal of the game,” Jones was quoted as saying.

"Etebo suffered a muscular injury which will take a while to recover,” noted Jones, who admitted that Etebo’s inability to complete the game played a huge role in the defeat

Potters’ fans took to the social media to express their disappointment over Etebo’s injury.

The former Warri Wolves ace has been one of Stoke City’s best performers so far this season after featuring in 11 games so far.

Super Eagles technical adviser Gernot Rohr will be keeping tabs on Etebo’s situation ahead of inviting players for AFCON 2021 qualifiers in November.
