Manchester United: How have they fared against Spanish teams

- Manchester United have faced 10 Spanish teams in European competitions

- The English side have only managed to record 14 wins out of 52 matches

- Real Madrid and Barcelona have been their biggest obstacle in their history

Manchester United's campaign have always suffered setbacks by Spanish oppositions in European club competitions.

The Reds have played 52 matches in their history against Spanish sides and have only managed to win just 14 and losing 17 other matches.

Since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement, United have just managed to play in the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League for the first time since 2014.

They eventually lost out to Sevilla over two legs as they continued their streak of posting bad results against Spanish clubs.

Ever since the European Cup was renamed as the Champions League in 1992, the Old Trafford outfit have faced Spanish teams on seven occasions in the knockout stages.

They have only progressed on two occasions which was in the 2001/02 season against Deportivo la Caruna in the quarter finals and also defeated Barcelona in the semi finals in the 2007/08 season.

Looking at their away matches played in Spain United have only tasted victory twice in 15 matches and drawn nine.

However they have tasted defeats to Lionel Messi-inspired Barcelona in the final of the Champions League in 2009 and in 2011.

United's record against mighty Barcelona and Real Madrid is nothing to write home about. Real have dominated the English side recording four wins and draws with two losses.

The recent 2-1 UEFA Super Cup victory at the start of the season wraps up the dominance of Los Blancos over the Manchester club.

In the Europa League the story is not different as United have found it hard to pass through lowly Spanish sides.

In the 2011/12 season, Atletic Bilbao outclassed the Red Devils in both legs of the round of 16 tie but they managed to see off Celta Vigo in the semifinal of last season's competition.

Under the tutelage of legendary manager Sir Matt Busy, during the 1956/67 European Cup season, United progressed into the last four by a 6-5 aggregate scoreline after losing 5-3 in the first leg.

However the present Jose Mourinho side could not defy history as Sevilla knocked them out in the round of 16 with a 2-1 aggregate result in the 2017/18 campaign.

It was the first meeting between the two sides in the Champions League and their 10th Spanish opposition but their poor strings of results against them have continued to be their nightmare.
