Sports Federation President Tasks NFA On Young Talents

The President of the National School Sports Federation (NSSF), Ibrahim Mohammed, on Thursday advice the Nigeria Football Association (NFA), to invest in grassroots football competitions to discover potential talents that would replace retiring ones.

Speaking to newsmen in Lagos, Mohammed pleaded with the NFA and the state football associations to take the development of grassroots football more seriously to boost the performance of the national teams.

Mohammed noted that maladministration in sports would result in poor performance of sportsmen.

He pointed out that failure to organise more grassroots competitions would worsen Nigeria’s woes, especially in football.

Mohammed stressed the need to discover talented footballers early and groom them to be potential players who would be able to wear Nigeria’s national jerseys.

"School sports should be well developed because it is from there we will spot talents that we can use for our national assignments" he said. "It is necessary that we redirect our energy to school sports for our prosperity".

He also advised governments to employ the services of qualified coaches to train pupils and students.

"Coaches already in our public schools ought to constantly go for refresher courses to keep themselves abreast with new trends in their sport" he said. "The problem with these coaches is that they do not upgrade their knowledge on the sport they are training students in. Any coach that has not attended a training programme, seminar or refresher course in the last 10 years is out-dated".
