Having already secured qualification for the next round as group winners, the encounter was a mere formality for United.

The tie saw Red Devils interim boss hand fringe players and the youth minutes under their belt to prove their worth as he changed his entire XI of the side that beat Crystal Palace at the weekend in the Premier League.

Tom Heaton, Charlie Savage, and Zidane Iqbal were all-handed debuts during the clash as the hosts took an early lead via Mason Greenwood who struck a stunner into the bottom corner.

However, Young Boys drew level just before half-time through Fabian Rieder who curled a beauty into the top corner from the edge of the box to make it 1-1.

While their were a number of goalscoring chances on either side of the goalposts in the second half, neither side could make theirs count as the tie ended in a draw.

The result, nonetheless, saw United end their group stage campaign as group winners as they extended their unbeaten run to five matches across competitions.

Meanwhile, Young Boys missed out on a Europa League slot after the draw having finished bottom of the pool behind Villarreal and Atalanta.
