The legendary United manager had the honour and privilege of working with some of the best footballers during his 26-year spell at Old Trafford.

His long stint with the Red Devils also saw him have some of the most effective captains football managers can only dream of.

Eric Cantona, Gary Neville, Roy Keane, Nemanja Matic, and Steve Bruce are among the legendary United players who wore the armband under Fergie.

However, according to the Scot, Robson stands out from the pool of captains the Red Devils had during his tenure.

"Well, he was easily the best captain I had. I think over the period he was at United, he was the best player," Ferguson told United’s website.
"The players loved him. They responded to him and he was the longest-serving captain in my time anyway," he added.

Robson sported the United armband for a record 12 years between 1982 to 1994.

Ferguson's admission comes at a time current Red Devils captain Harry Maguire has come under immense criticism from pundits and fans.

Some have gone on to suggest the Englishman does not have what it takes to lead the United dressing room, openly calling for his axing.

Maguire was handed the role by immediate former United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer just months after he was signed from Leicester City.
