A former Super Eagles coach Bonfrere Jo has officially applied to take over from German tactician Gernot Rohr who is under heavy criticism.

Soccernet is reporting that the Dutchman is keenly interested in returning to management and would love to take the Nigerian national team to the Nations Cup in January.

Several reports claim Rohr is set to be sacked from his position and Bonfrere is hoping for a shock return to that position.

It was gathered that the tactician has formally applied for the job as his application has been submitted to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

In 2016, Rohr was appointed coach of the Super Eagles, but his team’s recent performances have attracted criticism, that fans are calling for his sack, Complete Sports reports.

NFF desperately shopping for Rohr's replacement

The Nigeria football house is desperately making attempts to pay off Rohr as they shop for a formidable replacement.

It was gathered that the NFF has received a number of applications for the plum job and that of Bonfrere Jo has also been sighted.

Recall that the Dutchman was an assistant to ex-Super Eagles assistant coach under Clemence Westerhof at the 1994 World Cup. He then led the Dream Team to the gold medal in the football event of the Atlanta 1996 Olympics.

He left his role after the Olympics but returned in 1999 to lead Nigeria to a second-place finish at the 2000 Africa Cup of Nations.

Bonfrere Jo blamed Nigeria's inability to perform at the biggest level and win trophies on the wrong usage of players by Gernot Rohr who could be departing anytime soon.

Legit.ng earlier reported that former Super Eagles coach Bonfrere Jo has urged the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) to re-instate him as head coach of the national team 20 years after he was sacked.

Bonfrere Jo who won the gold medal for Nigeria at Atlanta '96 Olympics believes no one has done what he has achieved.

Recall that Bonfrere Jo led the Super Eagles to the African Nations Cup in 2000, where Nigeria lost in the final to Cameroon in Lagos.
