The Gunners were thoroughly dominant from the start and proved too strong for the Magpies, who are facing a real prospect of relegation despite their change of ownership.

Bukayo Saka, who was excellent throughout the game, put the Gunners on course to victory in the second half with a classy finish, before Gabriel Martinelli put the game beyond Eddie Howe’s reach 93 seconds after coming on.

How it happened

The Gunners seem to have found their footing this season after three straight defeats in their opening three league games of the season.

Despite a hammering at the hands of Liverpool, Arsenal showed no signs of hangover as they dominated possession from the start with some intricate passing and chance creation.

It was Saka who got his side’s first real solid chance as a floating ball from midfield found the England winger but he could not connect with the shot too well.

Newcastle’s best chance of the first half came from Jonjo Shelvey, whose shot outside the box forced a brilliant save from Arsenal keeper Aaron Ramsdale.

In the 40th minute, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang should have put his side into the lead after the ball fell kindly for him from a few yards out after Emile-Smith Rowe’s header was saved by the keeper but the Gabon international somehow hit the upright.

Arsenal continued their dominance in the second half and it eventually paid off as a brilliant string of passes saw Nuno Tavares set up Saka, who lashed a shot to the bottom corner.

That effort would prove to be the final significant action for the youngster as he pulled out with injury to be replaced by Martinelli.

Martinelli needed less than two minutes to stamp his mark in the game after coming on as he guided an impressive side-foot volley into the net after a ball over the top from Tomiyasu.

The only point of concern in Arsenal’s otherwise flawless afternoon will be the extent of injury to Saka, as the Gunners prepare to take on Manchester United in less than a week.
