Cristiano Ronaldo has extended a hand of comfort to his best friend Jose Semedo who lost his wife Soraia after health complications caused by an infection, Sun.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner is understood to have called the former Charlton and Sheffield Wednesday midfielder immediately after the news got to him.

Semedo who currently plays for Portuguese side Vitoria FC has been receiving support from fans on social media.

One wrote:

“I am thinking of you and sending you lots of hugs.”

Another added:

“Be strong Jose. I hope your friends and family can help you at this difficult moment in your life.”

How Semedo became best pals with Ronaldo

The Man United striker has been friends with Semedo during their youth academy days with the Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon.

Semedo was expelled from Sporting Lisbon by the president but Ronaldo influenced the decision to be reversed and they since formed a bond.

The gesture is something that has lived with the defensive midfielder for the rest of his life and he has spent several holidays with Ronaldo.

"I owe Ronaldo everything. If it wasn’t for him I would have been expelled from the academy and returned to the neighbourhood when I grew up. Many of my childhood friends are in jail or have got hooked on drugs.

“Nothing makes me think I wouldn’t have followed the same path. I would have ended up stealing cars like the others. I owe my sporting career, my children and my wonderful life to Cristiano.”
