Qian Yang was the first athlete to go on the podium as a gold medalist after emerging winner in the women’s 10-meter air rifle, Complete Sports, ABC News.

Yang narrowly beat out Russia’s Anastasiia Galashina and set an Olympic record. The bronze medal went to Switzerland's shooter Nina Christen.

The long-awaited medal was finally won by the youngster as she was jubilant during the medal presentation for her record-breaking feat.

China and the United States will be competing against each other at the Tokyo Games as US emerged winner of the 2016 edition.

The Americans finished the Rio 2016 Games with a total of 121 medals with 46 of them gold while China and Great Britain went home with 70 and 67 medals, respectively.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had earlier reported that Fethi Nourine is the first athlete at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games to have been sent home after withdrawing from competing with Israel's Tohar Butbul, Complete Sports, Japan Times.

Nourine was slated to face Butbul in the second round of the 73kg men's category if he went past Sudan's Mohamed Abdalrasool.

The 30-year-old told the press that he withdrew because his support for Palestine is bigger than his Olympic dreams.

Legit.ng also reported that Guinea will not be participating in the forthcoming Tokyo 2020 Olympics due to coronavirus concerns, Minister of Sports, Sanoussy Bantama Sow announced, Punch.

The West African nation only had five contingents into the Games including Fatoumata Yarie Camara (wrestling), Mamadou Samba Bah (judo), Fatoumata Lamarana Toure and Mamadou Tahirou Bah (swimming) and Aissata Deen Conte (athletics, women’s 100m).

The Sports Minister in a letter to the President claimed that the health of the athletes amid COVID-19 concerns.
