And what better way to kick off the spectacle than to have a remote-controlled car deliver the matchday ball to the football pitch?

This is exactly what happened as Italy faced Turkey in the first of 51 matches of the Euro 2020 in scenes that have since caused a buzz online.

There were spine-tingling scenes inside the Stadio Olimpico as the opening ceremony got underway, with Italy players passionately singing their national anthem while Andrea Bocelli, an Italian opera tenor gave a flawless rendition of Nessum Dorma.

After both anthems were sung and players were ready to get the match underway, there was a notable absentee – the ball.

Moments later, the ball was driven onto the pitch in interesting fashion from inside a remote control car which went to the match officials who took the ball and placed it on the spot.

The scenes typically drew hilarious reactions from football lovers online who could not get enough of the creativity that played out before kickoff.

“On the real, get me one of those remote control cars,” one said.

“Nothing that happens on the pitch the entire Euros will beat a remote-control car delivering the match ball onto the pitch,” another added.

“That’s it, the tournament has peaked, someone managed to create a dumb remote control sponsored car for the ball.” Went another.

Italy cruise past Turkey in opener

When the game finally got underway, Italy ran out comfortable 3-0 winners over Turkey thanks to an own goal from Demiral and a late flurry from Ciro Immobile and Lorenzo Insigne.

Stadio Olimpico was a quarter full, with upto 16,000 fans being allowed to attend the opener which certainly lived up to the hype.

Italy are obviously top of Group A after the win, and will watch the clash involving Wales and Switzerland in relaxed mood after their heroics on Friday.

Despite the emphatic win, Italy are not necessarily favorites to win the Euros, according to bookies.

In fact the Azzurri are not even among the top 5 favorites, who are currently ranked in the following order: France, Belgium, Spain, Germany, Portugal.

Earlier, Legit.ng had reported how an emphatic display by the Italian national team saw the Azzurri cruise to a 3-0 win over Turkey in the opening encounter of Euro 2020 on Friday night, June 11.

AS are reporting that there was no delight in the Turkish team as Roberto Mancini’s side were too strong and dominated the encounter from start to finish.
