Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has backed world champions France to emerge victorious at the 2020 Euro Championship this summer.

The 35-year-old believes the star-studded French team will build on their success from the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Didier Deschamps recently recalled Real Madrid goal poacher Karim Benzema to join the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Antoine Griezmann, and a few others in the attack - a squad Rooney believes it will be difficult for any team to stop.

Although the Englishman believes the Three Lions are one of the favourites to win the trophy, he, however, insists that France have more chances compared to England.

Rooney further added Belgium and Portugal among the four teams that stand clear opportunities to win the continental championship in the next few weeks. He was quoted by Daily Mail and MSN Sport.

"Kylian Mbappe, N’Golo Kante, Karim Benzema, Antoine Griezmann, Paul Pogba, Raphael Varane, Hugo Lloris: you look at their quality, experience and track record as world champions and realise that if their players turn up, they will win the tournament, no problem."

Rooney added that the unity in the French squad will play a big role in the course of the tournament this summer.

"They are not just a collection of great talents. On the pitch, as we saw in Russia in 2018, France are very much a team and unity gets stronger when you win things together.
"I just cannot imagine any one of Didier Deschamps’ players thinking, ‘I’m going to be the star to win the tournament for us. They will take their time, be composed, and try to do it together."

Meanwhile, England are still chasing their first continental glory since the start of the competition in 1960 while Germany and Spain are the most successful in the tourney with three titles each.

Portugal head into the championship as the defending champions having won the last edition staged in France in 2014.
