Stoke City have rewarded Nigerian midfielder John Obi Mikel with a one-year contract extension for his contribution to their campaign in the outgone season.

The 34-year-old midfielder will remain at the Bet365 Stadium until the end of the 2021-22 campaign having joined them as a free agent after parting ways with Turkish side Trabzonspor last year.

Mikel made 40 appearances for the Potters, creating an assist in the process and helping them finish 14th with 60 points on the league table.

The former Premier League club confirmed the development on their official website with defender James Chester also staying at the club for another year. The statement on Stoke website reads:

Despite his advanced age, the former Super Eagles captain seems to be enjoying his stay at his current club and the fans are making life easy for him there.

Before joining Stoke, Mikel had already represented Middlesbrough after joining them in the winter of 2019 but his deal was not extended by the club.

The Nigerian star is not new to English football as he spent a decade playing for Chelsea and winning silverware in the process.

He won one Champions League, two Premier Leagues, four FA Cups, and other major trophies at Stamford Bridge.

Legit.ng earlier reported that Chelsea legend John Obi Mikel has continued to find more ways to excite his lovely daughters after being spotted with two beautiful bicycles.

The 34-year-old midfielder whose current deal with Stoke City expires at the end of this season is currently with his family enjoying the pre-summer holidays.

He made an impression in the minds of the fans of the club which earned him a new one-year deal.
