Benni McCarthy once worked with Jose Mourinho during his spell at FC Porto and the South African legend has revealed that the Portuguese boss made him cry, The Sun.

The 42-year-old made a loan move from Celta Vigo to Porto and revealed his first conversation with the Special One brought him tears.

During McCarthy's spell, the club made it through to the semi finals of the Champions League as they dumped Man United in the last four with the African striker on target at Old Trafford.

And after his successful loan spell he signed a permanent deal at Porto in 2003 and helped the club win the Champions League in 2004.

McCarthy claimed Mourinho had attempted to land him at Stamford Bridge twice from Porto and Blackburn but the respective clubs did not release him.

McCarthy narrated to The Athletic:

"I arrived at Porto in 2001 in a bad state. I scored on my debut and we won, but then the manager (Octavio Machado) was sacked.
"I couldn’t believe that the man who took me there got fired. This young guy replaced him and said: ‘Benni, I know of you and I have watched you.
"'I think you are a fantastic player and I want you to be my guy’. Then Jose Mourinho proceeded to tell me all about me. He knew everything; he’d watched my games at Celta.
"How did he have this information? Jose told me that I could always speak to him, even if it was to get something off my chest. I started crying.
"He was treating me like a son."

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had earlier reported that former Chelsea and Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has landed two new big jobs barely two weeks after losing his Tottenham Hotspur head coach role.

The 58-year-old Portuguese-born coach joined the SunSport team as an expert columnist for the Euros billed for this summer to analyse and give his opinion on games as they unfold.

Jose has won two Champions League with FC Porto and Inter Milan as well as league titles in Portugal, Italy, Spain and England and this is one huge reason he is qualified for the role.
