Phil Foden Shines as Man City Claim Crucial Win to Inch Closer to EPL Title

Manchester City inched closer to their fifth Premier League title in 10 years after a narrow 2-1 win over Aston Villa on Wednesday, April 21.

Goals from Phil Foden and Rodri helped Pep Guardiola to a comeback win after his side fell behind barely 20 seconds into the match.

Both sides finished the game with 10 men as the referee gave marching orders to John Stones and Matty Cash in the 44th and 57th minute respectively.

Villa made the best possible start to the game when John McGinn fired in past Ederson from a low cross from Ollie Watkins after just 21 seconds.

From then on, City took hold of the game with a massive 82% possession and they eventually made their dominance count thanks to their technician Foden.

The England midfielder finished off a fine team move for his 14th goal of the season before Rodri turned the game on its head in the 40th minute with a header from Bernardo Silva’s cross.

There was a mild setback for Guardiola when John Stones was sent off late in the first half for a knee-high challenge on Jacob Ramsey.

But it was short-lived as Villa wasted their one-man advantage when they saw their own man sent off, with Cash being sent off for two bookable offences in the second half in a space of two minutes.

Despite the game having 20 men on the field in the second half, the game meandered to quite a cagey affair.

In the end, however, Guardiola will have Phil Foden to thank as the young midfielder is proving to be a revelation in the absence of injured Kevin de Bruyne.

This was the first Manchester City game since they controversially signed up for the European Super League, before withdrawing 72 hours later.

The win took them 11 points clear at the top, having played one game more than Manchester United.

Victory also meant City now only need eight more points to clinch a fifth title in 10 years.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Tottenham Hotspur vs Southampton saw the home side return to winning ways as they beat the Saints 2-1 in north London on Wednesday, April 21.

Spurs were desperate to bounce back from their disappointing draw against Everton in their last fixture to revive their Champions League hopes.

Heung-Min struck late from the spot to earn his side all the three points as they climbed to sixth on the log.

The win came barely 72 hours after Jose Mourinho was sacked as manager, with Ryan Mason taking over on interim capacity.
