Thiago Silva Breaks Silence After Costly Red Card in Chelsea's Humiliating Defeat to West Brom

Chelsea defender Thiago Silva has finally spoken following this costly red card during his side's 5-2 defeat against relegation-threatened West Bromwich Albion.

Silva was making a return to action for the first time in two months after an injury kept him on the sidelines.

However, his comeback was one to forget after he was handed marching orders midway the first half of the Saturday, April 3, Premier League encounter.

The experienced defender had earlier been booked for hauling back Matheus Pereira, before he picked a second booking that eventually earned him the red card.

His sending off sparked an astonishing capitulation, with The Hawthorns taking full advantage of the Blues' numerical deficiency to dominate the match.

Pereira was undoubtedly the West Brom's match hero, with the Brazilian star cancelling out Christian Pulisic's 27th minute opener before adding a second in the dying minutes of the first half to hand the visitors the lead.

Callum Robinson also scored a brace, with Mbaye Diagne also being involved as Big Sam's men stormed to victory.

Reacting to his red card, Silva admitted his sending off was costly to the team, but said he had learned his lesson.

He wrote on Instagram:

"Lessons need to be learned from difficult days, so that the next day is the beginning of a new beginning.

"I believe it was not an expulsion move, I haven’t seen the video yet, but the referee made his decision and we can’t change what happened," he added.

He further took the chance to send his teammates a rallying call ahead of their midweek Champions League meeting with FC Porto away in Seville.

"Now we have to join our forces, because Wednesday it will be another battle. Come on Chelsea."

Chelsea's home defeat threw the top four race wide open once again as the west Londoners now have an advantage of just two points ahead of fifth-placed Liverpool.

This was also the Blues' first defeat since Thomas Tuchel succeeded Frank Lampard as manager at Stamford Bridge.
