Cristiano Ronaldo was left devastatingly angry after his late winner for Portugal against Serbia was not counted.

The 36-year-old forward stormed off the pitch in the last moment of the game after his only goal of the meeting was overlooked by Dutch referee Danny Makkelie in the 90+4 minutes.

Furious Ronaldo slammed his captain armband by the touchline before walking straight into the dressing room while expressing his dissatisfaction towards the officiating.

His goal would have helped Portugal beat their hosts as the game was tied at 2-2 with the game already in the added time.

Ronaldo fired a weak volley over the goal line from close range after receiving a superb pass from Nuno Mendes but Serb captain Stefan Mitrovic pulled off a desperate clearance.

The Juventus attacker was convinced the goal was legit but the linesman refused to point his flag in the expected direction - an action which got the winger angry and he stormed off the pitch.

Reports claim the goal-line technology was not deployed for the game which made it a little more difficult to contend, meanwhile, the former Real Madrid star was booked for protesting the officiating.

Apart from failing to help his country clinch maximum points after the game, Ronaldo was also denied a chance to close the gap on becoming the player with the most international goals in history.

Reacting to the game, the skipper posted a picture of the Portuguese team with the caption:

"Being captain of the Portugal team is one of the greatest privileges of my life. I always give and will give everything for my country, that will never change.
"But there are difficult times to deal with, especially when we feel that an entire nation is being harmed. Lift your head and face the next challenge now! Strength, Portugal."

Liverpool star Diogo Jota put Portugal in a commanding position in the first half by scoring twice after 36 minutes.

Fulham's Aleksander Mitrovic fired Serbia back into the contest seconds into the second half with a close-range header before Filip Kostic equalised on the hour mark as both teams looked for a winner in the final 30 minutes.

The home team was forced to play the last two minutes with ten men after Nikola Milenkovic was shown a straight red card.

Legit.ng earlier reported that Cristiano Ronaldo could leave Juventus at the end of this season owing to their failure in Europe as well as the domestic league.

The Turin-based outfit has been dumped out of the Champions League at the last-16 stage twice in a row while they trail Inter Milan by 10 points on the Serie A table.

Ronaldo could not help the Old Lady avoid a 1-0 defeat to Benevento before the international break which sees them occupy the third position on the log.
