Arsenal continued their resurgence in the Premier League with a second victory on the bounce after a narrow 1-0 win over a determined Brighton and Hove Albion.
Substitute Alexandre Lacazzette’s cool finish from a Bukayo Saka cross was all the Gunners needed to exert the perfect revenge on the Seagulls, who have emerged victorious in their past two encounters.
Mikel Arteta sought to build on the 3-1 victory against Chelsea on boxing day but had to endure his side’s slow start as Brighton began the game on the front foot.
Brighton were at times guilty of being wasteful in front of goal against a nervy Arsenal defence in the first half with their forwards wasting glorious chances.
The visitors rarely threatened in the opening exchanges despite the return of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who missed his side’s last two games with injury.
Arsenal came from the break looking much sharper after the restart with majority of their attacks revolving around winger Bukayo Saka.
Aubameyang and Gabriel Martinelli came close on two occasions in the second half before the deadlock was finally broken in the 66th minute.
Lacazette came on for Martinelli who looked to have a nibbling injury and the Frenchman scored with virtually his first touch of the game after some good work from Saka.
Brighton came closest to a goal when Alireza Jahanbakhsh, who was preferred to Neil Maupay up front forced a spectacular save from Bernd Leno.
The win will be an encouraging one for Arsenal fans as the side climbed to 13th on the log with 20 points and they now stand six points off fifth placed Aston Villa.
Earlier, Legit.ng had reported how Premier League giants Arsenal are reportedly interested in the signing of Real Madrid midfielder Isco as Gunners boss Mikel Arteta is planning to bolster his squad for January 2020 transfer.
The North London side have been struggling this season in all competitions while has also given manager Mikel Arteta serious pressure.
Arsenal have lacked creativity, with £350,000-a-week midfielder Mesut Ozil frozen out in north London, and Mikel Arteta has his eye on a playmaker ahead of January transfer window.
