Man United had to wait until the dying minutes of the second half to seal a place in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup after they stunned Everton 2-0 at the Goodinson Park.

Two late goals from Edinson Cavani and Anthony Martial in the Wednesday night, December 23, clash were the only difference in the tough tie as United joined Tottenham, rivals Man City and Championship side Brentford in the last four.

The Red Devils came into the match in high spirits, having demolished Leeds United 6-2 in the Premier League earlier in the weekend.

However, despite dominating the opening exchanges against the Toffees, the Ole Gunnar Solskjaer-tutored side was unable to find the back of the net.

Bruno Fernandes had the best chance to set up Cavani for an opener inside three minutes of game play, but the Portuguese playmaker uncharacteristically fluffed the opportunity.

After a somewhat silent start, the home side slowly came into the game from the 22nd minute but could not put Dean Henderson to test.

The second half of the encounter was surprisingly in complete contrast of the first as chances were far and wide.

But with just two minutes to stoppage time, Cavani unleashed a powerful shot into the the far corner leaving Olsen with no chance to make it 1-0 after he was set up by Anthony Martial.

Martial would later cap the tie with a second at the death, finishing off with a low and smooth shot to double United's advantage.

The two goals were enough to send the Manchester side to the semi finals of the EFL Cup as they push for a silverware this season.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that Manchester City ran riot on Tuesday night, December 22, as the Citizens defeated Arsenal 4-1 right at the Emirates Stadium in the Carabao Cup.

The Gunners have now been eliminated from the quarter-final stage of the competition more times than any other side in the competition’s history.
