- Mohamed Salah was on the score-sheet in Liverpool’s 5-0 rout of Atalanta
- The Egyptian has now met Steven Gerrard’s Liverpool record of 21 Champions League goals
- Salah will hope to create new goals record in the competition this campaign
Mohamed Salah netted his 21st Champions League goal in Liverpool shirt and now the Egyptian has drawn level with former captain Steven Gerrard’s record.
Gerrard who spent 17 years with the Reds remained the club’s all-time highest scorer at the European competition but Salah has now tallied with him.
Although Diogo Jota continues to receive all the accolades after his brilliant display saw him bag a hat-trick in the 5-0 win against Atalanta on Tuesday night, November 3, Salah subtly created a record with his goal in the 52nd minute of the fixture.
The Egyptian is only in his fourth season with the club and now he is on the verge of creating history by possibly overtaking Gerrard during the ongoing campaign.
The 5-0 victory also smashed the record of biggest ever away win for an English side over an Italian club in the history of European competition.
However, Despite Salah’s closeness to another milestone, Diogo Jota was brilliant in the entire 90 minutes of the encounter.
Liverpool new boy Jota found the back of the net three times as the Reds completely blew away the Italian side to consolidate their position at the top of Group D.
Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand praised the 23-year-old Portuguese star for his sizzling show on the night and stated that he could fit into Roberto Firmino’s shoes.
Ferdinand told BT Sport:
"Firmino, like it or not, will want to start and this guy has put him under huge pressure.
“It was a perfect night, Klopp couldn’t have asked for more. Clean sheet, new partnership at centre back, the forwards - the recruitment team have done fantastically well.”
