Atletico Madrid can confirm that their manager Diego Simeone has tested positive for the deadly coronavirus barely two weeks before the start of a new La Liga season.
Los Rojiblancos will kick off the 2020-21 Spanish League campaign on September 27 when they welcome Granada to the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.
The Argentine-born tactician is however likely to miss his side's opening fixture due to the virus as he will be expected to stay isolated for two weeks.
A statement on the club's official website reads: “This Friday new PCR tests were carried out on the whole group and the technician has given a positive result. He is isolated at home fulfilling the corresponding quarantine.
"The first team, coaching staff and auxiliary personnel underwent PCR tests on Friday as soon as they returned from the concentration in Los Angeles after detecting a positive in a member of the expedition in the previous tests carried out on Thursday.
"The analysis of these new samples in the laboratory has determined that our trainer, Diego Pablo Simeone, has given a positive result for Covid-19.
"Fortunately, our technician does not present any symptoms and is at his home isolated and fulfilling the corresponding quarantine after being concentrated with the team since last Monday."
This development will however come as a huge setback for Atletico's preparations towards their contention for the La Liga title this season.
With Simeone out of the club's preseason for the next two weeks, his assistant Nelson Vivas will take his place on the training ground after long-serving No2 German Burgos left this summer.
The Argentine could however be back just in time for Atletico's home opener against Granada on September 27 once he heals completely from the infection.
Simeone is hoping to complete the signing of Barcelona attacker Luis Suarez as a replacement for underperforming Alvaro Marata who has been lined up for a return to Juventus.
