Manchester United are reportedly planning to beat Liverpool to the signing of Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara this summer.
The Spaniard has been linked with the Premier League champions all season long but the Red Devils appear to have established contact with the player.
Despite having one year left on his current deal with the German champions, the 29-year-old is open to leaving the Allianz Arena this transfer window.
Having spent seven seasons with the Bundesliga side, Thiago has seven German League titles to show for his stay at the club.
He was part of the squad that recently lifted the Champions League title after edging Paris Saint-Germain by a lone goal in the final last month.
SunSport reports that the Merseyside outfit was initially in pole position to secure the Spaniard's signature on a four-year deal.
It is now suggested that the Reds might need to offload Georginio Wijnaldum to raise funds for Thiago's bid.
United are now said to have taken advantage of their financial situation to make a move for the midfielder in a bid valued around £27 million.
Meanwhile, Norwegian reporter Fredrik AN Filtvedt, who works for Dagbladet TV, claims the Red Devils might have up their pursuit of the player.
He revealed that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side is close to landing the former Barcelona star, but added that his wage demands could be an issue.
With the club closing in on the signing of Donny van de Beek, United are desperate to bring in another marquee midfielder.
He said: "Hear that United - in addition to Van de Beek - are interested in Thiago.
"Liverpool's financial situation apparently means that they have to sell before they can buy (Thiago). "United come late to the party here, but in that sense it is possible to coup Thiago.
"The latest news is that there has been a dialogue between United and Thiago, but that the Spaniard's wage demands should be too high."
Thiago joined Bayern from Barcelona in 2013, where he has scored 31 goals in 235 games - winning a total of 16 titles across competitions.
Legit.ng earlier reported that RB Leipzig Defender Dayot Upamecano has emerged priority transfer target for Premier League giants Manchester United this summer.
The Red Devils are pursuing a move for the Frenchman after winning the race to land Ajax Donny Van de Beek on a five-year deal valued around £40 million.
United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is now hoping to complete the signing of the 21-year-old France international in the next coming days.
