Dominic Matteo: Former Liverpool defender wins battle over brain tumour

Former Liverpool star Dominic Matteo appears to have won his battle against deadly brain tumour illness.

The 45-year-old who also featured for Sunderland and Stoke City confirmed the new development through his official social media platform.

Matteo underwent surgery to get rid of the growth underneath his skull last November, followed by a six-month rehabilitation program as reported by Sky Sports.

The defender who could also play as a midfielder has however shared the news while also appreciating the staff at Leeds General Infirmary and St James's Hospital.

He said on Twitter: "Yesterday I got THE phone call, the one I’ve been praying for... my brain scan is clear. "After 6 months of fear pain rehab surgery and treatment.

"I’m healthy! It feels unreal! The LGI &St James hospital saved my life. They were simply incredible. Thankyou will never be enough!"

Matteo made his debut for the Merseyside outfit in October 1993 and soon became a regular player in the 1990s under Roy Evans and later Gerard Houllier for four seasons.

He made a total of 155 appearances across competitions for the Reds during his eight-year reign before eventually leaving them to join Leads United in 2000.

After hanging his boots in 2009, the 45-year-old ventured in punditry duties and was one of the regular faces on LFC TV.

A statement from his former club says: "Liverpool Football Club would like to express their delight at this news and wish Dominic and his family all the very best. We look forward to welcoming Dominic back to Anfield in the future."
