Luka Modric, current Ballon D'Or holder, missing in 30-man shortlist for award

- Luka Modric who plays for Real Madrid was snubbed in the 30-man Ballon d'Or shortlist

- The Croatia international last term beat Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi to win the award

- He is now the first player in history not to be present in 30-man man despite winning it last

Real Madrid superstar Luka Modric has been left out of the 30-man shortlist for the 2019 Ballon d'Or award despite being the current holder of the prestigious honor.

This is because the Croatia international was not impressive last season for Real Madrid as Los Blancos failed to win any title.

Modric even struggled for first team action when manager Zinedine Zidane returned to the Bernabeu which fueled speculation that the Croatian could be leaving.

He is now the first player in history not to be present in the 30-man shortlist for the Ballon d'Or after winning the award in the previous year.

Last term, Luka Modric steered Croatia to the final of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia losing against final.

His performances in the tournament helped him beat Portugal international Cristiano Ronaldo and Argentine star Lionel Messi to win the Ballon d'Or.

Meanwhile, the winner of the next Ballon d'Or award is expected to be picked among Virgil Van Dijk, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

Earlier, Legit.ng had reported how Virgil Van Dijk became a surprise target for Real Madrid and the Spanish giants are looking to tempt the Liverpool star to the Bernabeu.

The one-time most expensive defender is now rated as one of the best center-backs in the game since his £75 million move from Southampton in January 2017.
