Southwest PDP Congress: Makinde Supports Arapaja, Fayose Backs Olafeso

- The southwest zonal PDP zonal chairmanship election is ongoing at Osogbo

As the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) holds election into about 22 offices in its Southwest zonal chapter, the two chieftains fighting for the chairmanship position are being backed by different political godfathers.

Punch reports that a former deputy governor of Oyo state, Taofeek Arapaja, and the immediate zonal chairman of the party, Dr Eddy Olafeso, are contesting for the chairmanship position.

While Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo state is supporting Arapaja for the chairmanship position, Ayo Fayose, a former Ekiti governor is supporting Olafeso.

The newspaper reports further that 743 delegates would be voting at the congress.

Of the 743 delegates, Oyo state has 171 delegates followed by Osun with 130 delegates and Ekiti with 115 delegates.

Others are Ogun state with 114 delegates, Ondo 112 delegates and Lagos having the least with 101 delegates and a total number of 22 offices will be contested for during the congress.

The election will hold atWocdiff Centre, Iwo Road, Osogbo.

In a related report, PDP in the south-south region of Nigeria on Tuesday, March 9, elected a new executive committee, with a vow to reclaim power at the centre in 2023.

In the election which took place at Obi Wali Conference Centre, Port Harcourt, Chief Dan Orbih, who ran unopposed, emerged as the national vice chairman of the party in the zone.

The election was conducted by an electoral committee headed by Dr. Adetokunbo Pearse and was monitored by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

In another report, a group recently urged the PDP national headquarters to call Fayose to order alleging that the former Ekiti state governor has plans to destroy the party in the southwest.

The group, Concerned Southwest Professionals, on Thursday, February 25, stated that Fayose's antics were capable of ruining the party in the zone.

The group said the former governor is on assignment in the southwest to create division within PDP in order to actualise the presidential ambition of his new godfather in the ruling All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu.
