1. Supreme court verdict

In a verdict of the Supreme Court read by Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Tanko Muhammad, back in 2019, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was ordered to cancel all votes cast by the APC during the governorship election over the party's failure to conduct a primary poll.

The apex court also ordered INEC to recognise candidates of the political parties that came second (which happened to be the PDP) to take over as the rightfully elected candidates.

Thus, defecting to the APC may leave Matawalle attaching himself to a party that was not recognised in the election.

2. Power tussle in APC

At the moment, two rival factions in the Zamfara state's chapter of the APC lead by Abdulaziz Yari, Matawalle's predecessor, and Senator Kabiru Marafa have their eyes on the governorship seat.

There are chances that Matawalle will lose to either of both heavyweights in his battle for re-election come 2023 if by then he chooses to go for a second term.

3. Turbulence in APC

There no doubt that the APC has lost much of its popularity, especially in the north which has been ravaged by all forms of violent crimes and abject penury.

Even more, the illegal mining rampant in Zamfara which was recently banned by the federal government, coupled with the no-fly-zone order of the presidency has not, as most residents see it, been the best of decisions to help them come out from their predicaments.

Meanwhile, there were reports that Governor Matawalle might dump the PDP for the APC any moment soon.
