Governor Makinde receives COVID-19 vaccine, explains why he ordered sterility test

- After Oyo state received the AstraZeneca COVID-19, Governor Seyi Makinde ordered a sterility test to be conducted

- The governor who was administered the vaccine in his office recently said he wanted to be sure everything was still intact

- The state government had on March 10, received 127,740 doses of the vaccine from the FG

- Some members of Makinde's executive cabinet also received their jabs

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo state on Wednesday, March 24, joined the list of Nigerians who have received the AstraZeneca COVID-19 jab across the country.

Nigerian Tribune reports that Makinde took the COVID-19 jab at 12.20 pm at the Governor’s Office, Ibadan, the capital of the state.

Legit.ng gathered that the vaccine was administered by Dr. Muideen Olatunji of the state Primary Healthcare Board. He said recipients of the jab were only likely to have mild reactions.

According to the report, after receiving the vaccine, Makinde said he ordered that a sterility test be done on the vaccines received because he wanted to be sure that the AstraZeneca which came from India was properly handled and well preserved till it got to the state.

The state commissioner for health, Bashir Bello, had earlier stated that the result of the sterility test done by the state government at the virology and biorepository lab at the University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan, confirmed that the vaccine received was free of any form of micro bacteria, fungi and is strictly for COVID-19.

Channels TV also reports that the governor took the vaccine alongside his cabinet members at the executive chambers of the governor’s office, Ibadan.

Oyo had on March 10 received 127,740 doses of the vaccine from the federal government for administration to residents of the state.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that the president of the Nigerian Senate, Ahmad Lawan, was vaccinated against COVID-19.

This was disclosed by the Senate president's special assistant on new media, Abu Sidiq, who shared the photos of his principal as he got the vaccine jab.

President Muhammadu Buhari, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, state governors and many other political leaders have taken the vaccine as they seek to convince Nigerians of its safety.

In a related report, Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, received his first COVID-19 jab as more prominent Nigerians take the bold step to prevent the spread of the coronavirus pandemic in the country.

The National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) tweeted pictures of the professor taking his shot and displaying his COVID-19 certificate.
