The federal government has issued a disclaimer against a fake National Identification Number (NIN) verification website.

The Punch reports that this was disclosed by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) on Friday, February 26.

Legit.ng gathered that the NIMC warned the general public that the website, which claimed to verify numbers chosen to receive 5GB as part of a NIN verification reward programme was not associated with the commission.

The commission noted that the fake website - https://nin-5gb-offer.online - was run by fraudsters and advised members of the public to protect their personal information.

The disclaimer said:

“This website/platform is not associated with NIMC; it is run by fraudsters. Protect your personal information; do not become a victim!”

NIMC also told the public on its website that NIN enrolment and NIN were free, adding that persons should beware of fake and unauthorised apps collecting NINs.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that following the proposed use of the NIN as a requirement for voter registration in Nigeria, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reacted.

It was reported that the commission said the move is not backed by law, adding that it does not share its powers to register voters with any other government agency.

The federal government had announced recently that NIN is compulsory for most government transactions, including the opening of bank accounts, payment of taxes and voter registration.

The minister of communications and digital economy, Isa Pantami, who announced this when he hosted the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), had claimed the policy is backed by law.

In a related report, the federal government on Wednesday, February 10, said it would soon announce the deadline for the integration of the NIN with bank accounts.

Pantami made this disclosure in Abuja after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting.

According to the minister, a timeline for the mandatory linkage of the NIN with bank accounts would soon be released by the communication ministry.
