Gov Okowa signs bills establishing 3 universities in Delta state

- Delta state will soon get three new universities due to the recent bills signed by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa

- Governor Okowa says establishing the higher institutions will address the yearnings of Deltans for quality education

- The governor also provided data to back-up his thoughts about how students are stranded every year in the state

Delta governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, on Thursday, February 25 signed three bills for the establishment of new universities in the state. 

Speaking at the ceremony at the Government House, Asaba, the Delta state capital, Governor Okowa commended the House of Assembly for the prompt passage of the bills.  

The bills, which were presented to Okowa for assent by the Speaker of the Assembly, Chief Sheriff Oborevwori, were for the University of Delta, Agbor; Dennis Osadebay University, Anwai and the University of Science and Technology, Ozoro.

Okowa explained that out of 25,000 Deltans that applied for university admission in 2020, over 20,000 qualified but only 4,000 were admitted. 

His words:

“What we have done today is in the best interest of the state because it is a futuristic thing and people will come to appreciate it in the future. We believe that whatever actions we take, it is always in the best interest of the state.’’

Meanwhile, the Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku, has banned students from driving cars within the school premises.

A banner informing students of the ban was recently mounted at the entrance of the higher institution.

In another development, Governor Okowa on Monday, February 8 reaffirmed that his administration would achieve its set target before the end of its tenure.

The governor also promised that his administration would continue to give responsibilities and portfolios to people with experience in governance for the attainment of a stronger Delta state as conceived at the inception of his government.
