Ohaneze Ndigbo condemns use of force in Orlu by Nigerian military

- The recent military action in Orlu, Imo state is still generating reactions across the country

- The apex socio-political organisation in the south-east, Ohanaeze Ndigbo has frowned at the military action

- The group noted that such actions by the military is capable of breaching the peace being enjoyed in the south-east

The president-general of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Professor George Obiozor, has frowned on the use of force by the Nigerian military during the crisis in Orsu in Orlu zone of Imo state.

According to Professor Obiozor who is a former Nigerian ambassador to the United States of America, applying force to tackle the crisis will amount to national catastrophe.

He made the comment on Monday, February 22 when he visited a traditional ruler in the area.

Punch quoted him as saying:

“The use of the violent method will lead to a synchronised national crisis and ultimate disintegration of Nigeria; this too must be avoided.”

He further stated that those who preached or preferred military solutions to Nigeria’s problem were equally a threat to Nigeria’s unity as those enemies they were fighting.

He added:

“Nigeria is in a precarious situation and a great caution must be taken by the leadership to avoid events that have the capacity of incrementally aggravating or opening more threats of national crisis.”

He stated that insecurity in the country was real and should be treated as a matter of national emergency.

Meanwhile, the federal and state governments in Nigeria have recommitted themselves to addressing the mounting insecurity in the country.

At a meeting of the National Economic Council (NEC) on Thursday, February 18 presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa, the governments agreed to ensure swift investigation, arrest, and prosecution of crime perpetrators.

According to the resolution of the council sent to Legit.ng by Laolu Akande, spokesman of VP Osinbajo, both the federal and state governments agreed that the protection of all residents of all states including non-indigenous communities and religious and ethnic minorities is sacrosanct.

In a related development, the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) on Sunday, February 21 held a special prayer walk across the world over the rising insecurity and other challenges confronting Nigeria.

Legit.ng monitored the walk held in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja by the Throne Parish of the RCCG.

Addressing journalists during the procession, Pastor Tunde Benjamins-Laniyi, the pastor-in-charge of the parish, said the prayer intercession was a mandate from God, adding that it was also taking place in the over 40,000 parish churches of the RCCG in 198 nations across the world.
