- This is as a result of the new variant of COVID-19 which was recently discovered in the country

- Meanwhile, Brazil and Europe will also be in the same category as those banned by the USA

In what will come as a big blow to some South Africans, they will no longer be able to enter the United States of America.

This will also affect anybody who had recently been to the African country.

President Joe Biden will impose the ban in a bid to contain the spread of a new variant of COVID-19, Reuters reports.

Also, travellers who have been in Brazil, the United Kingdom, Ireland and 26 countries in Europe will not be allowed to enter the country.

Dr. Anne Schuchat, the CDC’s principal deputy director said:

“We are adding South Africa to the restricted list because of the concerning variant present that has already spread beyond South Africa."

According to the government, this is in an effort to protect Americans and also to reduce the risk of these variants spreading and worsening the current pandemic.

Then-President Donald Trump directed on January 18 those restrictions on Brazil and Europe be lifted effective Tuesday but Biden’s proclamation will rescind that decision.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that PDP urged Biden to impose firm sanctions on leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and officials of the Buhari administration over alleged corruption.

A spokesperson for the party, Kola Ologbondiyan made the demand in a statement on Sunday, January 24.

Ologbondiyan alleged that APC leaders and officials in the Buhari government were patronising terrorists, and undermining Nigeria’s democracy.

He asked the US president to freeze the assets of such people in the United States. The PDP also called for a visa ban to be imposed on the individuals.

In another report, Joe Biden was criticised for the first actions he took on his first day in office on Wednesday, January 20.

Recall that the newly inaugurated 46th US president signed 17 executive orders on his first day, some of which reversed some policies put in place by his immediate predecessor, Donald Trump.

Reacting to Biden's actions, Senate minority leader, Mitch McConnell, said the US president has headed in "the wrong direction."
