OAU announces resumption date, cancels 2020/2021 session

- OAU has cancelled its 2020/2021 academic session due to the disruption caused by COVID-19

- The school has also fixed Monday, February 8, as the resumption date for lectures

- Moreover, the institution's spokesman, Abiodun Olarewaju, noted that the date for resumption is subject to change in line with the situation of the virus in the country

Consequent upon its meeting on Tuesday, January 19, the management of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Ile-Ife has entirely cancelled its 2020/2021 session.

The school's authority has also resolved to resume academic activities from Monday, February 8, Punch reports.

OAU's public relations officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, confirmed this to journalists on Tuesday, Punch reports.

A statement in this regard issued by Olarewaju read:

"Consequent upon the directive of the federal government that schools should re-open, the Senate of Obafemi Awolowo University at its meeting held today (Tuesday), January 19, 2021, announced the following resumption time-table for the continuation of the 2019/2020 academic session that was suspended in March 2020 following the outbreak of COVID-19:

“February 7, 2021 – Final year students in the Faculty of Pharmcy, Clinical Students in the College of Health Sciences and year four students in the Faculty of Agriculture are to come into residence. All other students are to attend their classes virtually. February 8, 2021 – resumption of lectures."

Moreover, the institution's spokesman disclosed that the approved resumption schedule is subject to "periodic review in line with the realities and trend of the COVID-19 pandemic."

He, therefore, called on all staff members and students to adhere strictly to the safety protocols stipulated by the school's COVID-19 committee.

Meanwhile, the federal government had said it did not approve Monday, January 18, as schools' resumption date.

Speaking at the briefing of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19, on Monday, the minister of education, Adamu Adamu, said the government did not agree with the states on the resumption date.
