NALDA: Federal govt engages 17,000 rabbit farmers to boost economy

The federal government through the National Agricultural Land Development Authority (NALDA) has commenced a programme for rabbit farming which is expected to engage 17,000 youths, as part of efforts to boost the economy and reduce unemployment in the country.
NALDA is expected to make available the rabbits, cage, vaccine, and training for the youths free of charge while the beneficiaries are expected to return the kitten when the rabbit delivers so that it would be used to empower others.
Speaking with journalists including a Legit.ng reporter on Wednesday, December 2 in Abuja, the executive secretary of NALDA, Prince Paul Ikonne, said the agency would also buy the urine, dungs, and skin of the rabbits from the youths, which is also a source of income for the beneficiaries.

He revealed that from the first day the farmer starts rearing rabbits, they start making money immediately, their money will keep accumulating, at the end of the month and they will be paid based on the liters and kilogram of what they have submitted to NALDA offices at their various states.
On the income from the farming, Prince Ikonne said each beneficiary is expected to earn an average of N100,000 monthly from the sales of the urine, dungs, skin, and the rabbit itself.
He further said:
“At least the average of N100,000 a month somebody will be making from rearing rabbits from all these products, and you can see the level it will get to cater for families and homes, so it is something we have engaged in, and we will keep expanding.”
He said President Muhammadu Buhari has given all the approvals and the funds required to implement the program have been made available to NALDA.
For interested persons, the NALDA boss said they have to go identify themselves at the NALDA office in their states.
He added:
“We have offices across the country, at various state capitals. If you also check our website, you will see NALDA offices, we also have our WhatsApp group for those that intend to rear rabbits to also register through the NALDA WhatsApp group."

Recall that President Buhari recently directed that all abandoned farm estates of NALDA be retrieved to enable thousands of young men and women to engage in farming.
The president announced this at the launch of the National Young Farmers Scheme on Tuesday, November 10, designed by NALDA to spur more youth interest in farming among young people.
Meanwhile, the federal government is seeking the National Assembly’s approval to access $1.2 billion agricultural loans from Brazil.
This was disclosed by the minister of finance, budget, and national planning, Mrs. Zainab Ahmed, when she appeared to defend the ministry’s 2021 budget before the House of Representatives’ committee on finance on Tuesday, November 3.
According to her, the federal government had forwarded the loan request to the National Assembly which is aimed at addressing issues in the agriculture value chain as Nigeria moves to make it another source of revenue.
