Captain Muhtar Usman, the former director-general of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), has reportedly passed away.

According to The Punch, the former NCAA DG died after losing a fight to a brief illness in Zaria, Kaduna state on Tuesday, December 1.

A source close to Usman described the death of the former DG as shocking, saying he was rushed to the hospital on Monday, November 30.

“I just received the news of his death. He was rushed to a hospital yesterday in Zaria, Kaduna State, before he passed on.”

The burial arrangement is expected to be announced by the family of the deceased.

An astute aviator, Captain Usman was born on December 5, 1956. In October 2014, he was appointed the DG of the civil aviation regulatory body where he served for a five-year period before handing over to the present NCAA boss, Capt. Musa Nuhu.

Usman was the commissioner of Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) and managing director of the defunct Nigeria Airways (NA).

Office of the SGF mourns

In other related news, Babatunde Lawal, the permanent secretary of cabinet affairs office in the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, passed on.

Lawal died on Friday morning, November 6, from liver cancer at the age of 56 years, with his death coming two years after he was appointed permanent secretary.

An economist with a strong bias in fiscal policy analysis, management and strategic planning, Lawal joined the federal civil service in October 1987 as a planning officer of the Federal Ministry of Economic Planning.

Buhari mourns former governor

In a related development, Legit.ng reported that President Muhammdu Buhari expressed sadness over the death of Alhaji Abdulkadir Balarabe Musa, a former civilian governor of Kaduna state.

Musa was declared dead with Shehu Sani, a former senator representing Kaduna Central in the Nigerian Senate announcing the statesman's passing in a tweet on Wednesday, November 11.

Musa was elected governor of Kaduna state in 1979 on the platform of the People's Redemption Party (PRP), which was founded by Mallam Aminu Kano.

In a condolence message to the people of Kaduna state through his senior media aide Garba Shehu, President Buhari described the former governor as a "voice for the voiceless who remained steadfast in the call for good and inclusive governance."
