Doug Emhoff, the 56-year-old husband of Kamala Harris, the projected US vice president-elect, will become the first second gentleman when his wife is sworn in.

Emhoff will also leave his private law practice by Inauguration Day to focus on his role at the White House.

In August, he took a leave of absence from the law firm where he worked when Joe Biden chose Harris as his running mate.

Meanwhile, Americans and people around the world have praised him for the decision to leave his work to support his wife's career.

"My husband and I made the choice to put his career first (mine fluctuated part time-full time but also allowed me to further my education) but it was a JOINT decision. Had it made more sense for me to be lead- that is the way we would have gone. #bravo Doug!"

"I have so, much respect for @DouglasEmhoff. He campaigned and worked extremely, hard on behalf of @KamalaHarris. I was proud of him and for her."
