Lagos: Sanwo-Olu orders full reopening of schools, churches, mosques

- Lagos state schools have been asked to resume

Lagos state Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has ordered the reopening of schools and also permitted churches and mosques in the state to resume full services.

According to the governor, mosques can hold their prayers five times daily while churches can also commence weekly services.

The governor said churches and mosques should resume their full services.

“As regards our places of worship, we are now also permitting the mosques to resume their five times a day prayers; and in the case of churches, they are now also permitted to resume their mid-week services.

“We must not forget that the Coronavirus pandemic is still very much with us, and we must therefore strive to prioritize the safety of all our children, teachers, parents, and the entire society.

“All of these resumption guidelines and protocols must be strictly adhered to by the various stakeholders,” Sanwo-Olu said.

The governor also said cinemas and gyms were permitted to reopen as soon as possible, with a maximum of thirty-three percent (33%) occupancy.

The governor added that “next month, October, we will announce the decisions regarding the reopening of other sectors of the economy: night-clubs, bars, event centers, spas, public parks and so on. For now, these will continue to remain closed, until fixed plans for reopening are announced in October 2020.”

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has said that citizens will continue to wear face masks and use hand sanitisers until an approved vaccine for COVID-19 is found.

The NCDC stressed that Nigerians have no choice at the moment than to stick to the hygiene measures including rules on social distancing.

Chikwe Ihekweazu, the NCDC's director-general, noted:

Legit.ng reported that Lagosians who were bent on going to public places without wearing face masks as directed by the state and the federal government would have to deal with the police henceforth.

The police command in the state through its commissioner, CP Hakeem Odumosu, on Tuesday, July 7, said that the force has the order of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to arrest all violators of COVID-19 prevention guidelines.

In fact, Odumosu revealed that so far, the police command has arrested not less than 3,802 offenders between April and June.
