The Nigerian president said the cordial relationship he enjoys with the National Assembly does not imply that the legislators are being controlled by him, The Guardian reported.

Buhari made the statement through his senior special assistant on National Assembly matters (House of Representatives), Umar El-Yakub.

“The executive arm of government has always partnered with the members of the National Assembly, especially the 9th Assembly, as demonstrated by their actions in terms of expeditious passage of bills as well as screening of nominees for various appointments,” he said.

The president also stated that the cordial relationship between the executive and the legislature is aimed at servicing Nigerians generally.

Meanwhile, the controversy between the minister of state for labour and employment, Festus Keyamo and the Senate over the proposed employment of 774,000 for Nigerians is far from being abated.

Vanguard reported that the Senate president, Ahmad Lawan, on Monday, July 6, lambasted the minister over his stance on the employment, saying that Keyamo is too small to cause friction between the National Assembly and President Muhammadu Buhari.

Legit.ng gathered that Lawan said Keyamo is quite insignificant in the executive to cause any quagmire, adding that President Buhari is on the same page with the Senate on various development-driven national projects.

Lawan who was responding to a question in Abuja during an interactive session with journalists said that the N52billion appropriated project, must be implemented by the National Directorate of Employment ( NDE), as contained in the N10.8trillion revised 2020 budget.

He said the NDE would be fully in charge of the exercise designed to recruit 774,000 youths across Nigeria as part of the federal government COVID-19 palliative measures.

Lawan, however, said that the NDE and the ministry labour and employment must first explain the modalities for the recruitment process.

In another report, the House of Representatives has dismissed reports that over 50 lawmakers tested positive to COVID-19.

A spokesman for the House of Representatives, Honourable Benjamin Kalu, in a statement sent to journalists on Wednesday, July 8 said there was no time as 50 members of the lower house tested positive to COVID-19, urging the public to disregard the news.

Members of the National Assembly could fall prey to COVID-19, just like any other person. It is, therefore, unconscionable to attempt to weaponize this against the institution especially when the source of such strange information is a phantom,” Hon. Kalu said.

While cautioning journalists to always crosscheck their facts before going to the press, Honourable Kalu reiterated that, though the House of Representatives still works 5 days a week at the committee level, it has been sitting only once a week since the outbreak of the pandemic.
