Coronavirus: 3 Chinese quarantined in Plateau

- Three Chinese citizens have been quarantined in Plateau state over fears of coronavirus

- The state government said the Chinese were quarantined having arrived the state from Ethiopia on Friday, February 28

- Dr Nimkong Ndam who is the state's commissioner for health said the suspects have been isolated at a centre for proper investigation by the health workers

As Nigeria confirmed its first case of coronavirus in Lagos on Thursday, February 27, three Chinese citizens have been quarantined in Wase local government area of Plateau state.

The state's commissioner of health, Dr Nimkong Ndam, confirmed the development on Saturday, February 29, according to Daily Trust.

The commissioner said the Chinese were suspected having arrived the state on Friday, February 28, from Ethiopia for mining activities.

He said the suspects have been isolated at a centre for proper investigation by the health workers who have been sent to the area since Friday.

Coronavirus in Lagos

On Thursday, February 27, the federal ministry of health confirmed the first case of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) case in Nigeria.

The case, which was confirmed on is the first to be reported in the country since the beginning of the outbreak the viral disease in China in January.

The case is an Italian citizen who works in Nigeria and returned from Milan, Italy to Lagos, Nigeria on Tuesday, February 25.

Reports also indicated that the Italian had also visited Ewekoro in Ewekoro local government area in Ogun state this week.

The state's commissioner of health, Tomi Coker, on Friday, February 28, however, assured the residents and visitors in the state not to panic.

The infected Italian visited an undisclosed manufacturing company in Ewekoro community.

The commissioner added that the facility visited by the Italian has also been quarantined in accordance with the health safety standard.

In the early hours of Saturday, February 28, news filtered out that there was a mild drama at the Lagos isolation centre, as a 44-year-old Italian man infected with the virus attempted to run away from the centre.

It was gathered that the Italian was quarantined at the Mainland Hospital, Yaba, Lagos. SaharaReporters reports that the man was disappointed at the ill-equipped facility and poor treatment he is being given.

The Italian also complained of not being fed well and not receiving proper medical attention, all of which culminated in his decision to abscond from the centre.

Lagos government begins efforts to contain disease

As one of its measures to curb the spread of coronavirus in Lagos, the state government has kicked off an identification process so as to ascertain all who had contact with the infected Italian man.

According to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in a press briefing, those who will be discovered as contacts of the man in the state will be immediately quarantined.

Confirming this, the state's commissioner for health, Akin Abayomi, said that the process started in the afternoon of Friday, February 28.

Lagos health commissioner visits infected man

The commissioner for health has visited the Italian national who is the only confirmed case of the coronavirus in Lagos.

The infected man is currently isolated at the Mainland Infectious Disease hospital in Yaba.

The Lagos health commissioner also inspected other wards of the hospital currently under renovation. He confirmed the work will be completed very soon.

"I also visited the #COVID19 patient a male Italian national who is isolated at the Mainland Infectious Disease Hospital, where he is been managed by our well trained staff. I spoke to him and assured him of @followlasg resolve to ensure he gets adequate care #ForAGreaterLagos," the commissioner said.

Some Nigerians expressed reservations with the way the health commissioner appeared at the isolation centre without protection.

Obinna Okereke said: "The commissioner should be quarantined too for coming too close without protection."

Michael Edafe Igbe commented: "These two men ought to protect themselves with safety gears. The disease doesn't know whether you are a commissioner or not! Pls be guided!!"
