Abule Egba explosion: Governor Sanwo-Olu vows 'no mercy' for pipeline vandals

- Former vice president of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, is condoling with residents of Abule-Egba area of Lagos over a pipeline explosion

- Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos also vows there will be 'no mercy' for vandals in the state

- The explosion resulted in the death of at least two people while houses were razed

Former vice president of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, and the governor of Lagos, Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Monday, January 20, reacted to the pipeline explosion that occurred in the state late Sunday, January 19.

The explosion reportedly caused by vandals, was said to have left no fewer than two people dead as many houses were razed.

Sanwo-Olu said through his Twitter handle: “My thoughts and prayers are with the families and businesses affected in the unfortunate incident at Abule Egba."

The governor thanked LASEMA officials for their bravery and the Lagos fire service for responding swiftly and also working all night to reduce the impact of the incident.

Sanwo-Olu vowed that vandals will not be shown any mercy.

The governor further urged the people of the country to work together to ensure such man-made incidents like the one that happened in Abule Egba are avoided.

“Security and information gathering along volatile corridors will increase and a stronger synergy with communities must happen. We all have a role to play,” Sanwo-Olu added.

On his part, Atiku, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2019 presidential election, prayed for the families of those who lost their people and properties. He said his thoughts and prayers are with them.

The explosion, witnesses had said, may likely be from a vandalised petroleum pipeline belonging to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), situated in the area.
