Reigning Spanish champions Barcelona have sacked manager Ernesto Valverde despite topping the La Liga standings this season after 19 games with 40 points.

In each of his two seasons as Barcelona gaffer, Ernesto Valverde won the Spanish La Liga title, but that did not prevent him from getting the axe as the club made up their plan on Sunday, January 12.

Barcelona chiefs were said to have been looking for a new manager since their defeat against Atletico Madrid in the Super Cup semifinal where Diego Simeone's men came from behind to win.

Former Barcelona star Xavi was reported to have been contacted to replace Valverde, but he turned the offer down as he prefers staying with Al-Sadd

In two and a half years as Barcelona coach, Valverde won two LaLiga Santander titles, one Supecopa de Espana and one Copa del Rey.

Catalan giants have however replaced him with former Real Betis handler Quique Setien who will be at the Nou Camp until the summer of 2022.

"FC Barcelona and Ernesto Valverde have reached an agreement to terminate the contract that united both parties,'' the club announced in a statement.

Earlier, Legit.ng had reported how Barcelona were dealt with a big blow following the knee surgery of striker Luis Suarez who will now be out of action for the next four months.

The former Liverpool star has been impressive this season for Barcelona scoring 14 goals in 23 games for the Catalan giants.
