Raheem Sterling headed Kevin De Bruyne’s cross in the back of the net to give City the lead 20 minutes into the game. The hosts enjoyed more possession as their tradition dictates but lost numerous chances to increase their goal tally. Spurs were sharp at the back and cleared all attempts aimed at their net. It took another special moment for Spurs to equalize as substitute Luca Moura headed in the second in his first touch of the game in the 56th minute, barely a minute after coming in. Pressure mounted on City who looked more desperate to win and creating more chances.

Another substitute, this time on Man City’s side, Gabriel Jesus, appeared to have given the reigning champions a stoppage-time winner with a curled shot that landed on Spurs’ net. The goal sparked wild celebrations in the stadium but was short-lived after the centre referee ruled it out for handball after consulting the VAR officials.

Man City fans and players were left reeling from the new handball rule enhanced by the latest technology that once again denied them a victory against Spurs. City faced a similar drama in last season’s Champions League quarterfinal second leg clash that ended in Tottenham’s favour.
