ASUU strike: Students embark on operation no resumption, no election

- Students have vowed to disrupt the 2019 general elections if the ongoing strike embarked upon by ASUU and ASUP is not called off

- NANS also claimed that about 22.3million students would be disenfranchised if the ongoing strike continues

- The president of the group said enough of the politics being played with students' future

Ahead of the 2019 general elections, the leadership of National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has vowed to disrupt the election if the ongoing strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) is not resolved.

According to the students, the three-month old strike apart from hindering their academic pursuits will also disenfranchise about 22.3million of them.

The students claimed many of them had registered at the INEC offices nearest to their institutions and are presently in their various homes due to the ongoing strike.

"The continuous strike action by both ASUU and ASUP has not only brought increased pain on students and their parents, it is now seen by us as a deliberate ploy to disenfranchise our members, especially those who registered within their school environments and are presently in their various homes," Comrade Danielson Bamidele Akpan, NANS president said.

According to him, Nigerian students have decided to take their destinies in their hands. "Enough of the politics being played with our future," he added.

“We wish to inform the general public that Nigerian students would resist any election from holding in any part of the country should our campuses remain shut till election date.

“And on no account shall we allow this sinister disenfranchisement of the largest voting population of our citizens in a major election to pass due to no fault of theirs. We have 22.3 million registered students, eligible to change the destiny of the nation. We refused to be sacrificed in exercising this obligatory duty to our nation at this crucial moment. Our voices must be heard and our votes must count.

"After a careful observation of the continued insensitive shut down of our universities due to the strike action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) wish to unapologetically declare Operation no resumption, no election," Akpan added.

Recall that Legit.ng had reported that following the inability of stakeholders in the education sector to resolve the strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, the association on Tuesday, February 5, conducted a nationwide referendum.

The referendum, Legit.ng learnt, was to decide whether to suspend the industrial action which had crippled activities in the nation’s universities for three months or to continue until the federal government meets the demands of the lecturers.
